PlayStation 3’s avatar-based online social hub PlayStation Home will be closing down worldwide on March 31st, 2015. The service has been running since December 2008 and has been the main social area on the console for “tens of millions”.

In Home, players can decorate their own space with free or paid content, visit social areas with themes based off games and activities, or they can interact with friends or random strangers who just happen to be on the same server.

PlayStation Home will stop publishing new content from November 12th, 2014, and users won’t be able to purchase new content after December 3rd. Between that date and the end of March, Sony will be handing out free content to those on the service.

We’re sure it will be a sad day for many when it does finally shut down but, look at the bright side, when it’s deleted it will free up a large chunk of space on your HDD for games.
