Nintendo Is Working On New Gaming Hardware
Speaking at a press conference in Japan, Head of Nintendo Satoru Iwata revealed that the company is working on new gaming hardware and a “new membership service”. More details on the hardware, which is currently codenamed “NX”, will be revealed next year. Many speculate that the new hardware will be a new home console though Iwata didn’t explicitly state that.
Iwata said: “As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename “NX”. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”
He went on to say that the company is developing a new membership service that will be synchronised across multiple devices including the Wii U, 3DS, PC and smart devices as well as on NX.
It sounds like Nintendo is finally developing a service similar to existing gaming services such as the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. We’ll have to wait a good while longer to find out exactly what NX is.
Iwata also gave the go ahead for Nintendo games to appear on smartphones and, since that announcement, Nintendo’s share price has risen by over 25%. However, the share price is still less than a third of what it was in 2007 when the company was flying high on Wii sales.
