Satoru Iwata Has Passed Away

Very sad news for gamers as the President and CEO of Nintendo Satoru Iwata has passed away this weekend. Iwata had surgery in 2014 for a tumour on his bile duct and died on Saturday due to a bile duct growth.

Iwata joined Nintendo in 2000 and became the company’s president in 2002 after Hiroshi Yamauchi retired. Iwata was Nintendo’s first president that wasn’t related or married into the Yamauchi family.

Iwata led Nintendo through one of its most successful periods which included the launch of the DS and the Wii, when Nintendo’s stock sky-rocketed. This was followed of course by the 3DS and the lacklustre launch of the Wii U.

Fans of Nintendo will probably most remember Iwata for appearing in numerous Nintendo Direct videos, including this year’s E3 event in which he appeared as a muppet (alongside muppet Reggie Fils Aime and muppet Shigeru Miyamoto). Iwata was one of the few company presidents that wasn’t afraid to be part of the joke, and that sense of humour will be sadly missed.
