Gamescom 2015: Overwatch – Lúcio Character Reveal
Well this was a weird one. Blizzards forth coming Overwatch is the developers first wholly original title since Starcraft back in 1998 and so far its cast of characters has been an odd cocktail of styles that somehow meshes into a cohesive whole with each hero maintaining its own tightly honed design – now we can add strange, rollerblading DJ with a subwoofer hand cannon to that list. Ok then.
Lúcio’s high mobility will probably be incredibly fun to play but the character himself seems a little ridiculous. For context, here’s his bio courtesy of Overwatch’s battle.net profile:
“Lúcio Correia dos Santos grew up in Rio de Janeiro, in a poor and crowded favela that was hit hard by the financial upheaval following the Omnic Crisis. As Brazil began the long process of recovery, he wanted to find a way to lift the spirits of those around him. He found his answer in music and its power to bring people together and even help them forget their troubles, if only for a short time. He performed on street corners, in block parties, and as he got older, at a string of legendary underground shows.”
It seems Lúio stole some sort of weaponised audio equipment used to oppress his people and “converted it into a tool to rally them to action.”
Again, gameplay footage makes the character look enjoyable to play, it just seems a little…. well… tone deaf.
Overwatch enters its closed beta later this year with a retail release date still to be announced.
